Why is career clarity so hard to find?

All you want is a little 'Ah Ha' moment where you can say 'Oh, I think I know what I want to do next!' But when is this 'Ah Ha' moment coming?

This frustration can get you feeling like there is no way out. When will you ever find clarity?

I had a client come to me for a clarity session because she wasn’t sure how to move forward with her career. During our conversation, she discovered one of the reason why she was unsure of her career path was because of the company she worked for. The lack of support along with poor leadership had affected her self confidence. She was beaten down and didn’t even know it. This clouded her vision and ultimately came to a stand still with her career.

So what is holding you back? Here are a few questions to ask yourself to find out where you’re getting caught up.

  1. What do you love about your current job (or your last job) - list as many as you want.

  2. What do you not like about your current job (or your last job) - list as many as you want.

  3. In a perfect scenario, what would your current job look like?

  4. What is stopping you from having that perfect scenario?

  5. What are your ‘3 Must Haves’ and ‘3 Deal Breakers’ in your ideal job?

  6. Does your current job have these 3 Must Haves and Deal Breakers?

  7. What is keeping you from leaving or staying at your current job?

Discovering the root of the issue of your current situation can help you find out which direction you need to go with your career. Now that you have answered these few questions, you might have a general idea of what is holding you back. What’s next?

MAKE A PLAN!

Even if you don’t know what your next job is going to be, make a plan on how you will figure that out. Create actionable steps. Sometimes it might feel overwhelming when you feel lost and don’t even know where to start.

Here’s something that might help you.

Chunk things down in bite size so it is easy to do and check off the list. Imagine if your plan is to get a new job and once you find the new job, you can check that off the list. It is going to take weeks or even months to achieve that. Within those weeks or months, you might feel demotivated because you don’t see progress. But in reality, you have!

  1. What is your overall goal that you want to achieve? Eg. Find out what your passion is.

  2. What are the general things you need to do to get there? Eg. Figure out what you like and don’t like. Find out what careers are that are interesting to you.

  3. What are the steps you will need to take to achieve the above? Eg. Create a list of things that you like, talk to others about their jobs, research online etc.

  4. For each of the items listed in #3, list out how you are going achieve each item. Eg. Sit down one night and write a list of what you like, Decide who you will talk to about their jobs, Research at least 10 different occupations.

  5. What is the timeline? Eg. You will finish the list by next Tuesday. You will talk to 3 person each week. You will research 1 occupation a day

  6. What will stand in your way from achieving #5? Eg. You might be busy with work and won’t have time.

  7. What will you do if that happens? Eg. You will wake up early to create the list. If you don’t get to speak to 3 persons this week, you will add it to the next. You will just extend the deadline.

Now that you’ve created your 1 year vision, prioritizing what’s important in your life, finding out what is holding you back and creating a plan…

You’re ready!

Let's grow together and stay in touch.
