Why are you unhappy?

(even if everything is going well)

I was talking to a friend the other day, the phrase she kept saying was “I am grateful for what I have but…”. This is not my first time hearing this, I’ve heard this from many others around me.

Then I saw this Tiktok and it hit home. It made a lot of sense why the people I’m surrounded by keep referencing this phrase. Let me explain.

Those who I’ve been hearing this phrase from all have:

  • A job that pays them

  • A roof over their heads

  • Food to fill their bellies

  • A family that loves them (most of the time lol)

  • Disposable income to engage in social events

So if they are financially stable, with loving friends and family, then why are they unhappy?

Starting from a young age, most of us were conditioned to believe we need financial stability in order to live a good life. If you follow your dream/passion, you’re most likely not going to be financially stable. So you join the 9-5 team. You find a job that pays you well and doing work that you don’t mind doing. And your dream and passion slowly fade to a distant memory. You continue to do things that you don’t mind but also don’t really care about.

A recent study shows in 2022, only 20% of employees in the US are passionate about their jobs. That means 80% of the working force are not passionate about their jobs.

Why is passion important to your happiness? First, let’s define passion.

Passion is:

  • What excites you.

  • Find meaningfulness with what you do.

  • Giving you a sense of belonging.

  • The reason why you exist.

  • Giving you purpose in life.

We spend approximately 8 hours a day at work. That is a huge chunk of your day-to-day spent working on someone else’s passion, and spending your core energy on them.

Now can you see why you might be unhappy? You’re not doing things that excites you. You don’t find a sense of belong with what you do. What you do is not giving you purpose.

Financial stability is not everyone’s happiness. This conditioned belief (although does have an impact on our happiness), is not the only thing you need to be happy.

So what is your passion? What is your WHY? What is one small step you can do today to get you closer to fulfilling your passion?
