The other day, a seemingly ordinary moment turned into a revealing lesson for me when I noticed a sizable scratch on my daughter's skin while she was in the shower. Initially, I panicked as the scratch appeared quite severe, prompting me to ask if she had accidentally scratched herself. Her reply was a puzzled "No." As she took a moment to ponder, the distress on her face heightened, and she was soon in tears, overwhelmed by the pain she hadn't initially noticed.
This incident struck a chord with me because it's reflective of our experiences in the professional realm. Often, we navigate through stressful situations without truly acknowledging their impact until someone else points them out. We might internally cope in the moment and then swiftly move forward without assessing how we truly felt or managed the stressor. Much like my daughter, who had to pause, recollect the incident, and process the emotions attached to it.
What's crucial to realize is that as professionals, we can unknowingly accumulate work-related trauma. If left unaddressed, these experiences can linger and influence our career trajectories. Unprocessed stress can lead us to react to similar situations with fear or anxiety, impacting our decision-making processes.
Allow me to illustrate this through a client's story:
During a job search, she feared setting boundaries with a potential future manager due to a past experience where boundaries weren't respected, leaving her paralyzed in her job pursuit. It wasn't until we delved into her past experiences that she realized the unique nature of the previous situation. This realization liberated her, allowing her to envision new strategies to set boundaries comfortably without carrying the weight of past encounters.
It's essential to confront and process these experiences, as they could potentially distort our perception of future opportunities. By acknowledging and dealing with past traumas, we empower ourselves to respond to situations more appropriately and craft tailored solutions conducive to our well-being and professional growth.
Let's take cues from unexpected scratches – pause, reflect, and process our experiences to navigate our professional journeys with clarity and resilience.
