If I’m successful, then…

I hear too many people say: If I am successful, then I can finally do what I want to do.

Let’s flip that around: If I do what I want, then I’m successful.

Why is the first sentence harder to achieve. For most people, having a successful career means:

1. Financial freedom

2. Obtain a certain accreditation

To achieve that, you might think of all sorts of different ways to get there. But what if in order for you to get to financial freedom or obtain a prestige title, you’ll have to give great sacrifices?

What is the likelihood of you being able to sustain ‘success’ by giving up things that you love? Or doing things you don’t love? I’m sure you’ve heard stories of people who had a ‘successful’ career but they were miserable because the job was too demanding or the job didn’t align with their core values. And one day they quit and started over, doing something completely different.

That’s because they finally figured out what their definition of success was. And the reason why you hear these stories, is because they are more successful doing something that aligns with their definition of success.

In order to find a successful career, you’ll have to answer this one question:

What is my definition of success?

So, here are some questions you can ask yourself to guide you to your definition of success:

1. What are my top 3 priorities in life?

2. If I die today, what do I want others to say about my achievements?

3. Who am I doing this for? And why.

4. What do I want to do if money is not a factor? (Dream big!)

Now that you’ve answered these questions, do you see a theme?
