I Don’t Want To Do This For The Rest Of My Life!

That was the realization I had one day when I looked out my office window many years ago on a nice summer day. Why am I stuck at the office while I see others on the street enjoying the very precious sunny summer afternoon? Who are these people? What do they do? I want to be just like them. Where do I find a job like theirs so I can hang out on nice days like these instead of being in the office?

Fast forward, I am a Career Clarity Specialist and I am still working my 9-5. I work more hours and I am at my desk longer, yet I wouldn’t want it any other way. But what about the hanging out on a nice summer day on a random weekday? I still want it, but I’m no longer envious of those who get to do that while I’m working. I actually stopped paying attention to it. What’s changed?

I found my Purpose

I found my Why

I have a Plan!

Remember I looked out the window and wanted to be those who were chilling on the street? I was looking outwards. I was comparing my current situation to theirs - 'They look happy, what do they do?’ Then I started to look inward and asked myself what I wanted to do and how I wanted to feel. Little by little, I started to gain more clarity on what I wanted and started to create a plan for myself on how to get there. It took some trial and error and the journey is for a lifetime.

Moral of my story…stop comparing.

Use that focused energy on yourself. You deserve that. The person on the street enjoying her $7 frappuccino - she was just laid off and needed a pick me up. The 20 something on social you follow is living a lavish life - she defaulted on her rent two months in a row. Your friend who seems to have it together - she works 80hr a week and she’s having marital issues. We can compare all we want but we don’t know the stories of the people we’re comparing ourselves to. We are making up stories to fit our narrative. So focus on finding yourself. What you can find for yourself is going to be even better than what the others have.

Once you figure out your why and your purpose, you’ll notice things will start changing for you. Here’s an article I wrote on How To Find Your Passion.

Here's a video I did last year on comparison. It's less than 7 mins long. Hope this helps.
